Brits here say it's illegal to fly the Blue Ensign unless you are a full-paid naval officer...etc. All yachts have to fly a Red Duster or facing a hafty 5,000 pound fine and maybe with boat confiscated. Of course, you have to be a "British Subject" first before you are allowed to fly either one. Then, I found this on the Web: www.crwflags.com: Even some Yacht clubs are allowed to use the plain blue ensign: * Royal Albert Yacht Club * Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club * Royal Cruising Club * Royal Dorset Yacht Club ..... etc. What about Australia and New Zealand? I notice most Aussies and Kiwis fly their national blue ensigns.

The Blue Ensign is the official flag. The Red ensign was made redundant about 20 years ago by the federal government.

How come authorities do not post or reply to questions on discussion boards? They are not allowed to? Never hesitate to fine us, though. My Welsh neighbor Alexis, who is a 7k member as well, actually showed me a regulation book saying the Red Duster is the correct one to fly. The legal language is difficult to digest... took me a second to understand what "British subject" means. The book is about 40 year old. She's now sending emails to coast guards of UK, Australia, New Zealand, and maybe US and Canada as well. Hope we all find out and settle this issue once and for all. The red ensign is the basic flag any UK registered boat is required to fly while on the high seas or in foreign waters. (Technically you don't have to fly it by law in UK waters but everyone does.) Some individuals are entitled to the blue ensign, either by virtue of naval rank or due to membership in specific yacht clubs. If you are a UK citizen on a UK boat and don't know whether you're enittled to a blue ensign - you aren't! But someone flying a blue ensign will (normally) be an experienced sailor, from the UK. (I fly a red duster BTW)
